The cat I am not allergic to!

We have a new family member. This post is really for all of my relatives that know that I am not a dog person. Actually, not much of an animal person at all. I am okay with cats because they are independent and clean themselves. But I am also allergic to them, so that isn’t an option. So this little girl had a date to meet her maker on Saturday if a home couldn’t be found for her.

I am not a big fan of toy dogs. And I am especially not a big fan of the trend to take dogs of any size to the store, and I was shocked to hear over Thanksgiving that people are taking them on planes. Ugh! I am a fan of working dogs and despite her size she is still a terrier. She did inadvertently scare off a herd of deer when she went out to the bathroom last night. Yay! She was bought for breeding, but when she developed spine or back leg issues, that was no longer going to be a career for her. Unfortunately, the breeders decided they weren’t going to take care of her for the rest of her life either. Of course there are lots of things about this situation that I take issue with, but I won’t go into it here. She walks on four legs, but runs on three. And it doesn’t slow her down any. She is about a year old, so it is nice to not have puppy potty training issues. It is a little strange to have a dog that has been raised in a kennel with other dogs. She does not respond to any commands or a name. And she is so skinny. I think she must have been in the kennel with a dominant dog that didn’t let her eat much. We are working on getting her up to a healthy weight. So in many ways we are starting from scratch. The kids are thrilled to have a dog, I am thrilled that we don’t have the expense of feeding a large dog and it fits my requirement of “nothing with big poop!” I keep finding myself staring at her because she is so small. Smaller than a cat. And hey, I am not allergic to her.

so cute bethany- I know a niece of yours that will love her! (Penny wants a dog she can carry in a purse and thinks of Ollie as “just a dog”- oh dear!)

  • beki:

Aww, she looks so sweet. I’ve been on the lookout for a situation like this. My next dog will be small and adopted.

  • Angie:

What a sweetie! That was a WONDERFUL thing that you did…adopting her…I most definitely AM an animal lover, have two wienie dogs (would have more if DH would go along LOL), and bet I can read between the lines with the ‘issues’. One of my ‘boys’ had to have back surgery in 2002 and has had lots of problems with his back over the last 5 years, but he has such a zest for life…and I bet your new little friend does too. :> She’s adorable!

  • Gretchen:

What a cute little dog. I always thought I’d want a big dog but there is a benefit to having a little one who poops little and eats little. I’m glad for you guys!

  • ShackelMom:

Well, what a little cutie! Does she have a name (that she doesn’t come to)? I am sure that as time goes by she will find out how lovely life with people can be, and be a grateful little dog. You did a good thing! And I can just picture how excited the kids are to have a little dog!

Ah, yes. Ethan has that silly grin on his face every time he thinks about her, which is quite often since she is always underfoot. And Ariana is being very motherly. We hear that her name is/was Delilah. Which we thought of shortening to Deli (and Sandwich as a middle name!) Other potential names include: Bigfoot, Moose/Mousse, Smelly Cat, Kitten, and Tigerlily. Tigerlily is of course the one that will probably stick.

  • ShackelMom:

Oh yes, I vote for Tigerlily.

How wonderful of you to rescue a dog. And I know you say you’re not a fan of small dogs, but I’m in love with my Yorkie. He’s my baby. And yes, he does come on the plane with us when we can take him. :) They’re such great sprited, intelligent, sweet companions. I’m sure my Jackson would love to be her pal. Let me knwo if you have any breed questions!

Wow, another family with a new dog. Our kids want one really bad, but I just can’t get over the whole animal in the house thing. Texas weather is nothing like Michigan, but still, it’s extreme at times, and the dog just has to be inside. We may give in sometime soon. Thanks for sharing your experience.

  • Miss Dot:

oh good on you! what a wonderful thing you have done and I am sure that once she settles in she will shower you with love and affection. Best of luck.

  • mom2fur:

Isn’t she a sweetie! And so lucky to be adopted by a nice lady like you! My daughter and I got a chihuahua about 2 years ago. In a million years, I never thought I’d want a toy dog. I thought they’d be yappy and nasty. But even our vet says that Shadow Dante is more like a labrador than a toy dog.
You just keep showing her lots of love and affection, and she’ll soon listen to you.

  • Aunt Robin:

She’s a darling dog! Anders is sitting here on my lap and he started making barking noises when he saw her picture! I’ll bet it won’t be long before he’s begging for a doggy from his parents! I hope Tigerlily (or whoever she turns out to be) ends up being a big addition to the home, one you’ll be glad you rescued!

  • Christy S.:

Oh she is such a cutie and so fortunate that you came along. My Bootsy came to me because my doggie had died a few months earlier (almost 16 years old — her sister passed away at age 13) and a neighbor thought I would be the perfect candidate for a dog her sister had found but couldn’t keep since she already had 3. Well, she came in here like she owned the place and now has her forever home. I couldn’t figure out why anyone would just leave her to wonder and fend for herself at 5 months. She’s such a sweetie. My friend has a little dog who came from a background much like yours. So I say to you, as a dog lover, thank you for giving her a loving forever home.

    That’s a really cute dog…..what is her name? I don’t think you said…?
