Groovy baby pants
Last week when I was out at the thrift store I found this fun pillowcase. I was also excited that it was half off! Man, how lame when I don’t even want to pay full price at the thrift store!

I also spent this morning recreating the newborn baby pants pattern that I used last week. I had made some alterations to a larger pattern, but stupidly forgot to record my changes and couldn’t find my scrawled notes anywhere. So I started over. The problem was I had this new pattern and I hadn’t actually tested it. I kept eyeing that pillowcase and finally gave in. I am very excited about the results.

Someone is going to have a pretty funky baby! I haven’t decided who yet, since I am sure that not all of my friends who are having babies will really appreciate this groovy print. The man came home, held them up, and said, “That’s disgusting!” So I guess it isn’t for everyone, or everyone’s baby! I made my pattern and turned it into a file this time, so I don’t have to recreate it every time I want to make a pair of baby pants. Smart, huh? And I put it up for you to download here. Open and print with Acrobat Reader to make sure the sizing stays the same. And I still haven’t tested this on an actual newborn, so use at your own risk!
Having gone through the 60’s in my teens, and the 70’s in my twenties, I kind of marvel when you girls get all excited about ‘groovy’ looking fabric that just looks really dated to me… when I see it in a thrift store I kind of cringe and think, “I can’t believe I ever thought that was cool!” But ‘cool’ is in the eye of the beholder, and I am sure somebody’s mother is going to think those are the coolest baby pants they’ve ever seen! Much better on a baby than on a pillow! And if they end up on one of my grandkids, it will be a double blessing for me!
I know! When I saw some 80’s fabrics, I thought, “When people start handcrafting stuff out of that… I am done! No way!” Maybe it has something to do with not being around for the “era” that makes it possible to seem cool again. I was pretty young in the 80’s, but those styles still seem hideous to me!
Hey Bee, I tried the pattern out and it worked just great. Had a bit of trouble matching up the pieces - cause I cut the second piece the wrong way so my fault not yours! Have post a pic in my blog…just need to add the elastic in. Will be doing a few more of these too. Now I just have to get going on the kimono top which I have cut but need to start sewing!
Hi there!
Loved the pants, they just crack me up! I am sure Baby R II would look cute in them, but I am not sure they would work for a December baby! :)
I love seeing and reading about all your ideas, how fun!
Tell Arianna that she is really lucky to have a mom that sews her such cute clothes, mine were always so itchy and stiff!
Can’t believe she will be 11, Holy Cow!!!
Hey bee, just dropping by again to let you know that the two pairs of pants I made using your pattern have been gifted and well received! Thanks again for sharing. Hope your feeling better and the sun is shining where you are (only just came back and read that post you made with the google search). xo
Hi!
I found your baby pants pattern and was thrilled to use it. We are also in the midst of a move and I did not find out I was pregnant until all my patterns were packed away and in another state no less. The house has not sold and I am wanting to make a few things. I did not want to spend money on a pattern and so when I found yours I was so happy. I shrunk it by 70% on the copier and compared it to the premee outfits in the store and it is right on. I also closed in the feet using a foot shape- and keeping the extra length in the cuff so it will probably go up to 8lbs of baby.
I love the groovy print and wanted to thank you for sharing your pattern. I love your sewing blog.
